Clover is a complex business spanning technology and healthcare. Our technology allows us to collect, create and use data to continuously improve the healthcare of our members. Data allows us to check our intuitions, validate hypotheses and track our progress towards our goal of improving lives of those we serve. Similarly, data can give us insights about the company’s culture and practices and how they’re serving our employees and the wider job market.

I believe we have a moral obligation to create companies where career opportunities are equitably available to everyone. Only by measuring our hiring, promotion, and retention patterns by various demographic categories, can we know for sure where biases are harming the equitable opportunities we’re trying to create. The graphs below represent a first look at our demographic data, which we will supplement over time with additional data points as we’re able to track them.

We’re choosing to publish these numbers to hold ourselves publicly accountable for our performance in this area, and to be as transparent as possible for people who are interested in working with us. We’re also using this and other data — such as employee surveys — to understand where to focus ongoing improvements to our diversity and culture of inclusion.

I should also add that I believe there is public good created by opening up diversity data from companies. It becomes much harder for a society to ignore issues of bias and exclusion when there is empirical evidence of its existence and degree.

A huge credit is owed to Tracy Chou and Double Union for creating this momentum in the tech industry. These public data sets underscore the many points people from marginalized and underrepresented groups have been making for years about the systemic disadvantages they face.

Collecting, synthesizing, and presenting this data is no small task. This data would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of a small group of individuals over the course of many months. These individuals, along with all of the participants in the Diversity and Inclusion and Community Engagement Groups at Clover, have my thanks. And lastly, I want to thank all of our team members who have embraced these values and are pushing forward the hard work we still have to do. I’m proud of the commitment you’ve all shown to creating an inclusive culture and diverse team, and I appreciate everyone who has spotted and raised issues when we’ve fallen short.

Methodology

Data was collected between 4/25/17 and 5/12/17 via an optional survey administered by CultureAmp. Open to the entire company, (83%) Clover employees participated.

Clover’s Technology Branch is made up of the following departments: Engineering, Product Management, Product Design, IT, Security, and Data Science.
